Sunny Kim:
MotherTongue, MotherLand
“Sunny Kim's gentle, generous artistry is balm for our times. She invites us into her radiant, powerful creations with intelligence and care.” – Genevieve Lacey, Artistic Director & Executive Producer
Sunny Kim is a Korean-born vocalist, improviser, composer, and educator based in Australia. Drawing from her life journey as a global nomad – she has lived in Seoul, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Denver, Boston, New York and now Melbourne – Sunny’s artistic practice seeks to find meaningful connections to people, culture, and place through a dedication to self-discovery, deep listening, and collaboration.
In her new work, MotherTongue, Motherland, Sunny Kim has assembled a stellar cast of musicians: Helen Svoboda, Aviva Endean, Mindy Meng Wang and Gelareh Pour. At the heart of this new work is a poetic response to motherhood referencing the artists' and their mothers' experiences of migration, longing, belonging, joy, and pain.
Premiere: Sydney Opera House, February 2023. Commissioned by Sydney Opera House, enabled by New Work Now program donors and presented in association with UKARIA and Finding Our Voice.
